Gadsden State President Dr. Kathy Murphy honored with prestigious recognitions
Gadsden, Ala. — Dr. Kathy Murphy, president of Gadsden State Community College, has recently earned two prestigious accolades: selection into the highly respected Leadership Alabama program and recognition as a Troy University Distinguished Alumni of the Year.
“I’m honored to be a part of Leadership Alabama and to be recognized by my alma mater,” Murphy said. “Any success I have achieved reflects the incredible mentors, colleagues, and friends who have supported and inspired me along the way. These honors are as much a tribute to them as they are to me.”
As one of 77 leaders across the state, Murphy joins an elite group in the Leadership Alabama Class of 2024-25. “Leadership Alabama encourages its members to act, individually and in concert, to move Alabama forward to help our state reach its full potential,” said Ashley Kaplan, executive director. “It’s a pleasure to have Dr. Murphy as a member of the current class. She is truly an asset.”
Murphy said she is grateful to participate in Leadership Alabama, noting the importance of collaboration in her work.
“To be a part of Leadership Alabama is an incredible opportunity to learn, connect, and contribute toward a brighter future for our state,” she said. “I’m honored to have the chance to work alongside such an inspiring group of leaders.”
Troy University Distinguished Alumni of the Year
Murphy will be honored at Troy University on Saturday during halftime of the Trojans’ game against Coastal Carolina University. The Distinguished Alumni Award honors individuals who demonstrate exceptional services to their careers, communities, and the Troy University family. Murphy joins Derek Ellington, CEO of Value Creation Centrifuge; and Alison Scott Wingate Hosp, Vice President of the Alabama Retail Association; as this year’s honorees. Jason Jones, owner of a medical supply company, will also be recognized as Honorary Alumnus of the Year.
“It is truly an honor to recognize these members of the Troy family who, in true Trojan spirit, are making a difference through service to their communities, their careers, and Troy University,” said Faith Ward, director of Alumni Affairs. “Through their accomplishments and service, they continue to represent Troy well, and we are excited to honor them in this way.”
Murphy attended Troy University on a leadership scholarship and was inducted into five honor societies during her time on campus. She received the Outstanding Senior Award and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in education.
She began her career in public education in 1984 at Auburn Junior High School. She served as an assistant professor at Judson College and the University of West Georgia before being named Gadsden State’s president in January 2021.
In addition to her bachelor’s degree from Troy University, Murphy earned a Master of Education from Auburn University at Montgomery. In 1987, she was awarded a Doctor of Education from Auburn University. She earned a Master of Education in Educational Leadership in 1994 and an Educational Specialist Degree in 1995, both from AUM.
