Gadsden Regional Medical Center Introduces Advanced Heart Pump Technology to Save Lives

Gadsden, AL (August 27, 2025)– Patients facing life-threatening heart failure now have a new reason for hope. Gadsden Regional Medical Center (GRMC) is utilizing new minimally invasive, heart-pumping technology that can temporarily take over the heart’s work, giving it time to rest and recover.

Inserted into the heart by accessing the artery through a small incision near the shoulder, the device can circulate enough blood to keep oxygen flowing to vital organs while reducing strain on the heart.

“This technology is a game-changer,” said Dr. Lucman Anwer, cardiothoracic surgeon with Gadsden Physician Clinics’ Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates. “It gives us the ability to stabilize patients in critical condition and, in many cases, help them avoid more invasive, long-term heart devices.”

The heart pump is often used for patients recovering from a massive heart attack, complex heart surgery, or advanced heart failure. Its design allows patients to remain mobile during recovery, which can lead to faster healing and better outcomes.

“It is truly amazing to see a patient have the ability to walk following this procedure,” said Dr. George Robinson, cardiothoracic surgeon with Gadsden Physician Clinics’ Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates. “Before we began implementing this device, many patients had very limited mobility during their recovery period.”

GRMC is among the first in the region to offer this advanced treatment, furthering its mission to provide compassionate cardiac care close to home.
