This AARP Smart Driver course is all classroom instruction with no tests. Techniques taught and updates on Alabama traffic laws apply to drivers of any age, although the AARP Smart Driver course was designed specifically for drivers aged 50 and older. Participants can receive many benefits upon completion of the course by avoiding costs of deductibles and rate increases on auto insurance, loss of independent mobility, and injuries or loss of life resulting from a crash. Injury from an auto crash is the main cause for a person over age 50 to stop driving. An AARP survey of 1,200 participants in 2010 showed that 97% changed at least one key driving behavior after taking this course. There is an extra tuition fee for this course (paid to the AARP Instructor on the first day of class). For AARP members (with their AARP membership card), the fee is $15. For non-members, it is $20. Completion of the class may qualify drivers age 55 or older for insurance discounts. The tuition fee must be paid and the class must be completed in order to receive a certificate that can be given to our auto insurance company. Most insurance companies offer a discount on your auto insurance. Drivers must retake the class to continue their discount after the initial three-year period. The fee includes a workbook that participants keep. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute annual membership is required for course registration. As a member who has paid the $30 course fee, you may register for as many courses as you desire.
