Join the GSO in March for the annual Winter Classics Concert, featuring works by composers who are staples of the classical symphony repertoire.
The program opens with Beethoven’s “Coriolanus” Overture, composed in 1807 for Heinrich Joseph von Collin’s tragic play of the same name. The concert concludes with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4, the “Italian” Symphony, composed in 1833 and inspired by the color and atmosphere of Italy that Mendelssohn experienced during his visits to the country.
The program will also feature the husband and wife violin/viola duo of Jeffrey and Angela Flaniken from Birmingham, Alabama, performing Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for violin, viola and orchestra, which was composed in 1779. The Flanikens both serve on the faculty of the Division of Music at Samford University, and have performed throughout the United States and abroad as orchestral section members, soloists, and members of the Samford String Quartet.
